INTRODUCTION: 

Background/Context: (3-4 sentences): 

• Sooners Helping Sooners is a student-led organization that raises money  from students and the OU community in donations to provide emergency grant funding to Norman and Tulsa campus students who have been  affected by unforeseen financial struggles. The organization holds events  such as benefit nights and fundraisers, and can receive direct donations  through their website.  

Exigency: (1-2 sentences): 

• The act of exploring shared values within groups and organizations, like  Sooners Helping Sooners, demonstrates how everyday people can set aside  their differences in order to provide aid to someone else’s wellbeing and  future. This type of analysis can lead to better explanations on the  reasoning behind not only why individuals, but groups of people with a  shared value come together and unify as a whole to demonstrate the drive  for a greater cause. 

Roadmap: 

• This essay will explore Sooners Helping Sooners’ shared value of compassion by analyzing the reasoning behind their shared value, their support after national disasters, their involvement in fundraising, and their initiatives in creating new ways to help others. The value of compassion is enacted in not only the OU community, but as well as nationally, and it allows individuals to come together to engage with social discourse in a meaningful way. Groups coming together to participate in issues like this one can create a bigger audience and a louder voice than individuals themselves.  

Thesis: (1-2 sentences): 

• This paper will analyze the OU organization, Sooners Helping Sooners, ultimately demonstrating that the members of Sooners Helping Sooners enact the value of compassion while engaging in the social issue of unforeseen financial strain. Through the various activities and community services offered, Sooners Helping Sooners are truly making a difference in the OU community and beyond.
